作者簡介
馬基維利 (Niccolò Machiavelli, 1469-1527)，出生於佛羅倫斯望族中貧寒的一支。父親是律師，他自己在佛羅倫斯大學接受正統的學術訓練。28歲步入政壇，被任命為佛羅倫斯共和國的國務秘書，積極與聞國防與外交事宜，先後出使法國和德意志，還在佛羅倫斯推動國防改革，以民軍取代雇傭兵。
42歲那一年，被法國推翻的麥迪奇家族在西班牙扶植下重返佛羅倫斯執政，共和派失勢，馬基維利被麥迪奇家族的羅倫佐解除公職，又因涉及反麥迪奇家族的陰謀而在一年後被捕，獄中慘遭逼供，獲釋後退隱，著述度日。
1512年動筆寫作的《君主論》，原本打算獻給烏比諾公爵，即小羅倫佐‧德‧麥迪奇，寄望麥迪奇家族能重整義大利破碎的山河，說不定還能藉此機緣謀得一官半職，雖未獲青睞，並在他死後五年才出版，但後人才有機會讀到他的名山之作。1519年，他和麥迪奇家族達成某種程度的妥協，重出政壇。1527年，麥迪奇家族遭罷黜，他嘗試在重新建立的共和政府謀得一官半職，卻因為與舊政權的關係而無法贏得信任，在同年逝世。
名垂青史的著作有四：《君主論》、《論李維羅馬史》、《戰爭的藝術》、《佛羅倫斯史》，使其成為文藝復興文明一座醒目的標竿。
