作者簡介
約翰·史坦貝克 (John Steinbeck, 1902-1968)，出生於加州沙林納斯（Salinas），成長於距太平洋岸二十五哩之遙的農地沃谷，河谷海岸都是他最傑出小說的場景。1919年，進入史丹佛大學就讀，斷斷續續選讀文學與寫作，1925年輟學離校，往後五年在紐約市當工人和記者維生，同時致力創作第一本小說《金杯》。
婚後遷居太平洋叢林市（Pacific Grove），出版兩本以加州為主題的的短篇小說《天堂牧場》和《大地的象徵》，另有數篇短篇小說後來集結成《長谷》。描述蒙特利（Monterey）鄉野鄙人的《薄餅坪》問世，使他功成名就，經濟無虞。
畢生勇於實驗，屢屢改弦易轍。1930年代後期有三本專寫加州勞動階級的力作：《相持》、《人鼠之間》，以及眾所公認的最佳傑作《憤怒的葡萄》。1940年代初，以《被遺忘的鄉村》一書成為製片人，《柯提茲海》又搖身一變成為嚴肅的海洋生物學研究者。除此之外，他也為戰爭效力，寫下《投彈了》和引人議論的劇本小說《月亮下去了》。
後半生住在紐約市和沙格港，常和第三任妻子周遊各地。後期的作品包話《查理與我》、《美國和美國人》等，以及死後出版的《伊甸園東寫作日記書信錄》、《薩巴達傳》、《亞瑟王及其高貴武士行誼》和《憤怒葡萄寫作日記》。1962年獲頒諾貝爾文學獎。
